Romantic Urban Fantasy–Wanna See as Graphic Novel?

Spirit Hunger Graphic Novel—One Day!

\"romantic

Now that my novel is published and has gathered some really nice reviews on Amazon, I’m looking into the future. WAY, WAY into the future. Like, let’s say, 5 years?

As you must be aware by now, I’ve enjoyed the writing process so immensely that I’ve fallen in love with my characters. Apparently, that happens often with writers…

Anyways, because I love Adi and Honi so much, I want to see them in another medium than print. So I’ve dusted off my digital drawing board, signed up with PencilKings, and I’m re-learning how to draw.

What’s Involved?

Lots of time, I’m afraid. The timeline for my romantic urban fantasy is literally five years because apart from perfecting drawing techniques and software, so much goes into making a graphic novel.

Thankfully, the heaviest lifting is already done because I created a detailed outline for romantic urban fantasy novel, outlining 70 scenes. So I know which scenes are pivotal and deserve a double-spread, for example.

Here is an example of the first couple of scenes:

Timeplan for my Romantic Urban Fantasy Graphic Novel

  • Year 1-3: Learn how to draw both realistically, and how to reduce the sketches to a graphic style, yet to be determined;
  • Year 4: Creating thumbnail layouts;
  • Year 5: Pull it all together into an actual graphic novel

So far, the experience has been awesome. I took a drawing class here in Frankfurt where I’m learning the basics. The next one will start next month, and I can’t wait!

The owl is something we did in 90 minutes in order to learn to see detail in a photograph. I love creating sketches and drawings in pencil where I only need to worry about tone rather than color…

First Character Sketches

We were given a challenge this month of April to create a baseline character, then create different expressions. At the beginning of the post, I\’ve given you my hero Honi with a serious face. Here he is with angry and confused expressions. Let me know what you think!

SticksandStonesThe story

Six months after nearly losing their lives to a serial killer in New York City, FBI Special Agents Ty Grady and Zane Garrett are suffering through something almost as frightening: the monotony of desk duty. When they’re ordered to take a vacation for the good of everyone’s sanity, Ty bites the bullet and takes Zane home with him to West Virginia, hoping the peace and quiet of the mountains will give them the chance to explore the explosive attraction they’ve so far been unable to reconcile with their professional partnership.

Ty and Zane, along with Ty’s father and brother, head up into the Appalachian mountains for a nice, relaxing hike deep into the woods… where no one will hear them scream. They find themselves facing danger from all directions: unpredictable weather, the unrelenting mountains, wild animals, fellow hikers with nothing to lose, and the most terrifying challenge of all. Each other.

My take on it

Part 2 of the series about two rough and ready FBI agents Ty Grady and Zane Garrett. This time the boys are exploring the Appalachian mountains with Ty’s father and brother. Zane is not a nature person. At all. More bickering and angst ensues, especially since Ty’s father has unresolved issues with his son. These eventually lead to a dangerous series of events that could very well end in tragedy.

I couldn’t decide on just a few quotes – this book is just THAT good 🙂

“Are you still pissy about the rubber band cannon?” Ty asked him in exasperation.
“Ugh.” Zane started unbuttoning the BDU blouse. “You’re lucky that guy from accounting didn’t know it was you when his toupee went flying. He might have rerouted your next paycheck to Greenpeace.”

“Zane’s lips quirked. Every bullet fired from a service weapon had to be accompanied with a written report for the Bureau. Ty had fired… quite a few bullets at the cab that had almost smeared them across the highway in New York City. Zane didn’t know what paperwork you had to fill out for throwing your gun at something. He’d never tried that before. Hell, he’d never even thought of it before.”

“It’s all fun and games ’til somebody throws a grenade,”
[…]
“Never bring stones to a grenade fight,” Ty advised sagely.”

“I won’t let you fall.” Then he winced apologetically. Very trite. He sighed. Trite but true.

“It probably hadn’t been the greatest idea, dragging him up here for his first hike. But Ty was sure he’d been enjoying himself before they were almost killed. Repeatedly.”

“What he was afraid of, he’d come to realize, was not dark spaces or falling from great heights or being buried alive. His greatest fears, in the end, were letting down those he loved and saying the words “I love you” without any hope of hearing them in return.”

Yeah, in case it wasn’t obvious – I love this book.  Meet Ty’s grandfather who kills water hoses with a sharpened spade. Ty’s brother and parents who love him in their own ways. Nature that is out to kill you in many inventive ways 🙂

And I’ve changed my mind: MEET THE REAL TY GRADY!

Cut & Run by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban

Cut & Run by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban

My rating:  5 of 5 stars

CutandRunThe story

A series of murders in New York City has stymied the police and FBI alike, and they suspect the culprit is a single killer sending an indecipherable message. But when the two federal agents assigned to the investigation are taken out, the FBI takes a more personal interest in the case.

Special Agent Ty Grady is pulled out of undercover work after his case blows up in his face. He’s cocky, abrasive, and indisputably the best at what he does. But when he’s paired with Special Agent Zane Garrett, it’s hate at first sight. Garrett is the perfect image of an agent: serious, sober, and focused, which makes their partnership a classic cliché: total opposites, good cop-bad cop, the odd couple. They both know immediately that their partnership will pose more of an obstacle than the lack of evidence left by the murderer.

Practically before their special assignment starts, the murderer strikes again – this time at them. Now on the run, trying to track down a man who has focused on killing his pursuers, Grady and Garrett will have to figure out how to work together before they become two more notches in the murderer’s knife.

My take on it

Another series I’m so happy to have discovered. This is the first book in a series about FBI agents Ty Grady and Zane Garrett. Both are thrown together and hate each other. So far so cliche. What makes this different is that both men are teetering on the verge of breakdowns, Ty because of past trauma and Zane because of serious alcohol and pharmaceuticals addictions. Yet they learn that they can trust each other against the background of a serial killer within the FBI ranks. Not only do they keep saving each other’s lives, they are attracted to each other and have angry hot sex. Seriously mind-blowing hot sex. And lots of angst and man-pain and near death experiences. This book hits ALL of my buttons! 🙂

Ty Grady and Zane GarrettI’ve rarely come across two main protagonists that are as beautifully drawn and explored as these two men. The story itself holds its own as well. It’s not thrown together to show off the romance but stands alone as a suspenseful thriller full of twists and turns. I’m so glad that I discovered the series rather late, given that the first book was published 8 years ago. This way I don’t have to wait ages to read the next volume.

I found some fan art online casting Nick Bateman as Ty Grady and Joe Manganiello as Zane Garrett. Wowsa, I’m on board 🙂

FanFiction vs. Source Material

Derek Hale

So this is what usually happens: I watch a show like TeenWolf, then totally fall in love with a character such as Derek Hale, werewolf supreme. Then things happen. The story becomes flat or doesn’t develop the way I want it to. Or maybe I just would like to find out more about the backstory of the character. Anyway, that is usually my trigger to visit FanFiction.

And now the character becomes 3-dimensional and so much more interesting than in the original TV version. In my world, Derek Hale is Alpha and gets together with Stiles Stilinski, Spark extraordinaire. The stories have everything: very often amazing writing, they’re sexy, witty, exciting and some are novel-sized with 100k words and more.

And if I have trouble imagining the characters, sites like DeviantArt help me visualize, because some of the fanart is mind-blowing.

I particularly like the idea of Stiles being a weak human who runs with wolves. His relationship with Derek is very fractious at the beginning. Derek has been hurt terribly in his life and he won’t let anybody close to him because of his traumatic experiences. Stiles is this annoying teenager that never shuts up. He’s also human and therefore prone to injuries and in danger of getting killed by out-of-control wolves.

Over the years, the two of them gain understanding of each other. Derek learns to trust Stiles and Stiles grows up. Plus he gains magical powers. Which is really really cool 🙂

Stiles is an integral part of the pack and his humanity allows him to do things the wolves can’t, even though they’re are outwardly stronger and faster.

Are you telling me

And the best thing is how he learns to stand up to Derek. Stiles goes from an obnoxious teenager with only one friend to a self-confident member of the pack who has no problems setting his Alpha straight.

Sterek

In my head, Derek and Stiles are together and fighting side by side to keep Beacon Hill safe. As it should be. Oh yes, and nobody dies! Scott and Allison are together (with Isaac), Boyd and Erica are fine, Danny and Ethan are happy! So there 🙂
